Further clarification: Yes it must digital all the way on the answering
end. A digital POTS line is usually refereed to as an ISDN line. You need
an ISDN modem on the answering end, so an incoming 56k modem can connect
above 33.3. There may also be other solutions available from the phone
company, but ISDN is the only one I've seen.

For a 56k call to work the only analog part of the connection allowed is
from the calling modem to the first telephone switch.
