You do *not* have to compile the config file. m4 is a preprocessor that
simplifies the process of editing the config file. That is all.

If typing "m4 sendmail.mc > sendmail.cf" is too big a pain for you, I
suggest outsourcing your mail server or look at the alternatives such as
Communigate Pro or the new OS X Server 2.

The m4 syntax is not too bad once you understand what each command does. You
just have to spend the time.

Certainly there are alternatives that claim better throughput or security.
Postfix is quite popular. But there is nothing better tested (ie. used) than
sendmail.
