Re: OS X on NIS?

Hi, all.

I'm head drafter, sys and network admin., and an EIT (engineer in training)
at a small structural engineering firm. We have about 15 Macs and Windows
boxes plus several plotters and printers and a 100Base network. As you
might guess, I'm an amateur at the computer stuff, although I've learned a
lot about it in the past five years, setting up the server and the network.

We've been running domain e-mail and desktop dial-on demand web access
through an old pentium running Linix (smail, IPMasquerade, etc.). It's also
our file server. It works great and it was free, but it's a pain for me to
fix problems with it. The command line interface and the necessity of
changing scripts make things seem really excruciating. I'm sick of having
to ask my boyfriend (a developer with Cisco) for help!

I want a sever platform that's easier to use, and I've heard bad things
about Windows NT.

My understanding is that the version of OSX server that will support
multiple platforms is due out in April. Is that true? Does anyone know how
much it will cost? Has anyone been involved in beta testing? Is it
dependable and easy to set up? Does it sound like a good solution for a
small company like us?

Right now, I'm trying to decide between OSX server and a cube and a newer
version of Linix with X-Windows or another visual interface plus a new
Pentium. We'll be bringing in DSL at the same time, so security will become
an issue, too (we're current using a dial-up connection, and so I've pretty
much ignored network security up till now).

Advice would be welcome. Thanks!
