OS X on NIS?

I have been trying to get OS X Server to read users from our NIS domain. I have found some sheets on the net on how to do this but there is a twist in our setup. I can't figure out if this twist is causing the trouble or I just haven't gotten the normal setup right. In order to secure the NIS passwd
map I am using the adjunct map which is good for security but, it seems to be causing problems when trying to log into the system. If logged in as root I su to an NIS user it works fine but, if I try to log in as that user directly I am denied access. What I believe is happening is that root can still
see the actual passwords but no other users can thus not allowing the user to log in. What I would like to know is if there is a way to work around this without degrading my security? Am I missing something that needs to be added to netinfo?

So I can get automounting info from NIS, view users, etc. I just can't login. Anyone done this type of setup?

Thanks, Bryan.
