Re: OS X Server and NT Domains

If you set up Samba as I describe, the Authentication Manager hooks into Samba will be broken, so that setting won't matter. The stock /etc/smb.conf file won't be used at all; it will be /usr/local/samba/lib/smb.conf instead, so you don't have to mess with locking/unlocking that file. Samba will hit NetInfo on the backend for unencrypted password verification; however, modern Windoze clients require encrypted passwords, which means that you either have to disable encrypted passwords on all the Windoze clients (via registry hack) or maintain the smbpasswd file manually or via scripts etc. If Apple and the Samba team would roll the Authentication Manager hooks into the standard Samba distribution, this problem would go away...but I don't know enough about the coding and/or political issues involved to be able to say whether or not it'll ever happen.

It is entirely possible, but I don't recommend using the stock Samba installation to do it. Turn off Windows services in Server Manager, and load the latest Samba build in its default location of /usr/local/* (it'll all go in there automatically if you just do the "make", "make install", etc. as the instructions direct). If you want to do it right, you'll have to spend some time reviewing the Samba documentation. We're using our MOSXS box as an NT PDC, so all our Windoze clients authenticate off of it.

If you set up Samba as you describe, I'm guessing it's no longer necessary to lock the smb.conf file (as described in KB article 106570)? Is it still necessary to turn on Authentication Manager on the OS X clients and NetInfo domain servers (as described in the Windows authentication section of "Understanding NetInfo")? Do you need to maintain a separate user database for the Windows clients, or can that be synched with the OS X usernames/passwords?
