sending mail without local sendmail

Hello!

I do not want to configure sendmail, but I want to send mail via some crontab, shell-scripts.
How can I send mail to an smtp-server that is not localhost?

I think about this

"doing some strange things" | mail -a reciever -s smtp-ip

but mail can not do this without a localy configured sendmail.
I thought to use mutt, but this can not do this either.

Bye,
Christoph
