NFS mount shared using AFP

What I'm looking to do is share an NFS mount using AFP.

Here's what I have:

I have 1 database file that needs to reside on an hfs volume. When this file
resided on the Solaris (vxfs) box it would corrupt out and cause all sorts
of problems.
So I moved it over to an OS X Server... No problems accessing the file but
now the users need to log into 2 boxes.

because

I have a "User" directory for all my users on a Solaris box. I want to be
able to have the users log into the OS X box and be able to "mount" their
user directory from there.

So what I did was:

Created an NFS share one the Solaris box and exported that to the OS X
Server. No Problems there... I mounted the share to /Shared Items/Users.
The shared actually mounts one the Desktop with and alias that resides in
/shared Items/Users.

However when I try to set the Sharing Attributes using ServerAdmin The alias
winds up pointing somewhere else. I've checked the alias to make sure that
it is pointing to the proper directory... That's OK.

What am I doing wrong? Has anyone ever tried this and if so did you have any
positive results?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
