Hmm. I've found that tho the Server Admin won't let you set a long short_______________________________________________
name, NetInfo Manager has no problems with it. Is this bad then if I set
longer short names here? I haven't seen any problems so far (~3 months).

Unix shortnames are a maximum of 8 characters long. Always have been.
That has nothing to do with mail addresses: if you want more set up some
mail aliases. How you do that depends on which email system you're
using.
