Re: Short name longer than 8 characters?

We are getting a new file server - yes its mac os x!

We are getting a new mail server - its windows.

The old mail server uses the very logical convention first letter of first name and last name (I am "agerson" for Adam Gerson)

Since we are setting up 2 new servers from scratch I would like people to have the same username for the file server and mail server. However, I am limited by mac os x's 8 character usernames. I just don't think that "tgoldst1" is a good idea. So, I am looking for some advice. I can user the unlimited "name" field in osx sever to store either agerson or adamgerson ad have the same username on the mail server. This would help considering we could just import the old usernames from the old mail server to the new one. Are there any good articles or books on naming and user management ?

Unix shortnames are a maximum of 8 characters long. Always have been.
That has nothing to do with mail addresses: if you want more set up some
mail aliases. How you do that depends on which email system you're
using.
