boot into single user, mount your root volume and do a long listing
to see if you have the /var symlink. If not:
ln -s /private/var /var

The cant setuid for netinfod is ok, it is busted.

See if that helps.

Well, the link is there and the attempted file to be written is there as well,
but has a size of 0.

I tried to launch the /System/Library/CoreServices/loginwindow.app
manually through ssh and got the following error:
AE (616) - FAILURE OSErr -1706: AE.framework: incompatible with current
HIToolbox

Some more details:
G4 dual 800 MHz, 256MB RAM
bofore updating: Mac OS X 10.1.5 all recommended updates
attempted updates:iPod.pkg, SecurityUpdateJuly2002.pkg,
NetworkingUpdate.pkg, AppleScriptUpdate1.8.3.pkg

Looks like a reinstall to me - or is there any cure to this symptom?
