Re: Still no login after Sercurity Update July (resolved)

Well, well, well,

Thanks to all who responded to my problem and helped me in getting up and running again.

The problem was actually that some files couldn't be read (read/write errors -36) after the updates had taken place. I only found this out when I tried to back up my OS X volume with Retrospect, before doing a clean reinstall. The backup wouldn't complete successfully and left the following lines in the log file:

$[40] Can't read file Script Editor, error -36 (i/o error, bad media?), path: OSX_Boot:Applications:AppleScript:Script Editor.app:Contents:MacOS:Script Editor.
$[40] Can't read file Script Runner, error -36 (i/o error, bad media?), path: OSX_Boot:Applications:AppleScript:Script Runner.app:Contents:MacOS:Script Runner.
$[40] Can't read file Hei.dfont, error -36 (i/o error, bad media?), path: OSX_Boot:System:Library:Fonts:Hei.dfont.
$[40] Can't read file HIToolbox, error -36 (i/o error, bad media?), path: OSX_Boot:System:Library:Frameworks:Carbon.framework:Versions:A:Frameworks:
HIToolbox.framework:Versions:A:HIToolbox.

Replacing the file HIToolbox under OS 9 with a file from a 10.1.4 box did the trick! I am back in OS X now, without a reinstall!

How could I find out if HIToolbox was replaced by an update, I ran?

Now, as to why I got these errors, I can't tell. The machine itself is only 8 months old. Could a drive start to fail that quickly or could it have happened during the updates I performed?

Thanks again for all support,
Alex -;}

OK. This gets us somewhere. Try to throw out:

/Library/Preferences/loginwindow.plist
/Library/Preferences/com.apple.loginwndow.plist
/Library/Preferences/com.apple.windowserver.plist
/Library/Preferences/com.apple.powermanagement.plist (if it is not there, no biggie)
/var/db/SystemConfiguration/com.apple.PowerManagement.plist (just to be thorough)

tell me if this helps....

Nope, it didn't - see above. I tried it though.

boot into single user, mount your root volume and do a long listing

The cant setuid for netinfod is ok, it is busted.

See if that helps.

Well, the link is there and the attempted file to be written is there as well,
but has a size of 0.

I tried to launch the /System/Library/CoreServices/loginwindow.app
manually through ssh and got the following error:
AE (616) - FAILURE OSErr -1706: AE.framework: incompatible with current
HIToolbox

Some more details:
G4 dual 800 MHz, 256MB RAM
bofore updating: Mac OS X 10.1.5 all recommended updates
attempted updates:iPod.pkg, SecurityUpdateJuly2002.pkg,
NetworkingUpdate.pkg, AppleScriptUpdate1.8.3.pkg

Looks like a reinstall to me - or is there any cure to this symptom?

Greetings,
Alex
