Well, well, well,

Thanks to all who responded to my problem and helped me in getting up and running again.

Replacing the file HIToolbox under OS 9 with a file from a 10.1.4 box did the trick! I am back in OS X now, without a reinstall!

How could I find out if HIToolbox was replaced by an update, I ran?

If you navigate through the hieracrhies of an update, you will run across a file called name.of.update.bom
This file contains the files and permissions associated with an update. Bill of Materials (BOM)
the lsbom command through the command line will allow reading of such file like this:
lsbom /path/to/where/the/update/is/located/update.bom | more (or less)

This will let you read it.

Now, as to why I got these errors, I can't tell. The machine itself is only 8 months old. Could a drive start to fail that quickly or could it have happened during the updates I performed?

Run a surface scan of the disk with a good utility program. This will mark the bad blocks as bad and make sure they are not written to again.

Way to go.
