Re: Short name longer than 8 characters?

Part of the reason for teh 8 character limit is evident when you bring up a detailed file listing from the command prompt. It only shows the first 8 characters of the Owner and group. THus it is easy to confuse who owns a file if you have 2 users or groups with the same first eight characters. The system keeps them straight by UID and GID so longer names should only affect programs not designed to show the full greater then 8 character names.

Server Admin isn't the only thing that won't work with a short name longer than 8 chars. If it was, it wouldn't limit the short name.

Hmm. I've found that tho the Server Admin won't let you set a long short
name, NetInfo Manager has no problems with it. Is this bad then if I set
longer short names here? I haven't seen any problems so far (~3 months).

The problems would come when you try to change some user info from the GUI, which cannot then re-input the long shortname.

This is speculation on my part. I have done no testing.
