Hi all._______________________________________________
Just thought I'd through in my 2c on the matter. We have been using short
names longer than 8 characters since the start of the school year (6 months)
without any hassles. We now have over 800 users with a short name that is
their real name eg. Fitzpatrick Andrew, without any hassles whatsoever. The
boss wrote a program that did a mass import into Netinfo with passwords and
everything and it has all worked fine. The only problem is that you cannot
change passwords and names via Server Admin anymore. We just telnet in and
do it via command line (much quicker that way anyway).
So in short, yes you can have longer short names and yes it still will work.

than 8 chars. If it was, it wouldn't limit the short name.

name, NetInfo Manager has no problems with it. Is this bad then if I set
longer short names here? I haven't seen any problems so far (~3 months).
The problems would come when you try to change some user info from the GUI,
which cannot then re-input the long shortname.
This is speculation on my part. I have done no testing.
