Not completely correct. ONLY from Macs via AFP can you use the long name. Everything else uses the short name. (though I will admit I have not tried FTP with the long name but I have assumed it would not work)._______________________________________________

That's what the long names are for. You can use either short name or
long name when you're logging in and a user never even has to know their
short name. What are you complaining about ?
