Now I have heard about "journaling filesystems" before, but I don't what
they are. Can you (or anybody else for that matter) explain what this,
and how it works?

A journaling file system keeps a "journal" of all tranasactions to the filesystem so that if it fails it only needs to examine its journal and the state of the transactions completed to the file system to rebuild any failed operations.

This also eliminates lengthy fsck's and disk rebuilds.

If you have access to a Compaq/DEC Alpha CPU-based system running Tru64 Unix (64-bit Unix) with AdvFS (Advanced File System), it is an example of a fully operational journaling file system that's in use in many datacenters and on many desktops. FYI.

Yes, as does VMS, and Linux's Reisner FileSystem, and IBM has jfs too.
