I guess I don't see how to get only 2 netinfod's - following the guide, one
of the systems will have 3, and either both will have 3, or one will have 4
once I add the clone.

I misread your requirements. Apologies-

Server1 (your parent) will have 2 (local and network)

Server2 will have 3 (local, lab, and a clone of network)

If you use NetInfo Manager or nidomain to create your domain, you can have a tag other than network. (lab, for instance)

sudo nidomain -m lab
#add a root user
nidump -r /users/root .>root.nidump
niload -t -r /users/root localhost/lab < root.nidump

...then add lab into the heirarchy as you already did with server2's network.
a) add server1 into machines (with proper serves, as you've currently done)
b) add proper serves entries to the server2 entry, which will have been created for you when
you created the lab domain
c) set Directory Setup to bind to the local IP and tag "lab"

...don't forget to modify server2's entry in the / machines to reflect the proper tags.

At least that's how I've done similar things in the past (approximately).

You /might/ be able to create a clone called something other than network:

nidomain -c notnetwork server1/network

I'd test it first, though- and automatic failover would almost certainly not work (DS supports looking through multiple IP's for a parent... not so sure about multiple tags though.. broadcast binding might still work)

...This is actually rather advanced for most NI usage. I've rarely seen a three tier hierarchy, although in Apple's Network Administration class, we create a 4 tier. Why do you need the lab domain?

Test all of this extensively, or I'll claim gremlins climbed in my head and typed it.
