Well, I finally decided to try installing OS X server on top of OS X client, and that seems to have worked. Go figure. If anyone here knows of any major pitfalls to this approach, feel free to enlighten me ;)

Thank you to everyone who helped me out through your replies! Though I'm sure the questions have only started, especially now that I can actually *use* the OS ;)
