Setting up FTP on Web Server

Greetings group,
I have been listening/lurking for several weeks now, this is my first post,
please excuse if this issue has already been addressed in the past.

Just finished setting up our x-server, transfered our site and am able to
access it via IP address and am getting ready to go "live" so to speak. But
I can't seem to make heads or tails with the file access permissions
settings, and am completely in the dark about how to set up the web-server
to allow FTp via GoLive. If anybody could point me in the right direction
I'd appreciate it. I have tried to follow the instructions in the pdf
manual, but the correct buttons don;t seem to be highlighted yada yada..
Thanks in advance for all your help, this is a great resource for a newbie
like me.
