Re: Tape Backup and xServe

I have the IBM 3581 LTO drive which is very similar to the ADIC model you were talking about (I believe IBM licenses the design). The maximum speed of a single LTO-1 tape drive is 15mb/sec. Connecting it via FC isn't going to make it faster - likewise, putting in a FC to SCSI bridge probably won't make much of a noticeable performance hit. I don't know whether your situation would let you get something off of eBay, but there have been quite a few FC to SCSI bridges for sale for < $500. I was going to get one this past month, but we're booked up and won't get around to testing it with my LTO autoloader.

You may be able to get away with a FC hub a used FC switch. Or you may want to dedicate one of your two FC ports to connect to the tape device.

My earlier experiences with IEEE-1394 <-> SCSI adapters hasn't been positive, but I've never used the Belkin unit either.

If I recall properly, if you don't have a video card in the Xserve at all, you can't do remote control either since there isn't a framebuffer at all. At least, that's what happened with VNC. If you can run it totally headless, then you should be fine removing the video card. Unfortunately, some apps and installers don't quite understand that yes, there are Macs out there that will be running completely headless. You may have to do some contortions if you run across that scenario.

BTW, I was just in Charlotte last week.

Remove the video card and run the server headless, provided the applications you are running on the xServer can be run headless. This will free up a slot for the SCSI card. Use the included admin tools as well as SSH from a remote Mac to admin the server.

I think you can also get GUI access to the desktop using Apple Remote Desktop ($299 10-Client/$499 Unlimited-Client Licence) without the video card installed but you may want to call Apple to confirm this.

Subject: Tape Backup and xServe

I have a new xServe and xServe RAID. I will be implementing RAID 50 and that
takes care of most of my concerns about having redundant data. However, I am
considering purchasing a tape library for 3disaster recovery2. The ADIC tape
library should meet my needs except there is no SCSI port on the xServe
and the 2 slots are filled (one with a VGA and the other with a fibre
channel card).

My options as I see them are:

1 Buy a Vixel Fibre Channel switch (unmanaged) $3500 and an ADIC
Scalar 24 LTO-1 $18,000 + tapes
This solutions about $24000+. It is the best and fastest
solution and would provide a great long-term solution but I don9t have
$24k+.

2 Buy the Vixel Fibre Channel switch (unmanaged) $3500, an ADIC Fastor
$7000, and a SCSI to Fibre Channel converter $3000 + tapes
This was recommended by the rep from ADIC. He said the converter
should work okay. In MHO I would wind up paying a lot to dumb the
fibre channel down to SCSI and I can see compatibility issues in
there somewhere.

3 This morning I came up with another idea don9t know if it will
work. I buy just the ADIC Fastor (SCSI) and a Belkin FW to SCSI adapter.
Then I can connect the SCSI drive to the FW port. (The FW to
SCSI adapter is $50.) The folks at Belkin say it 3should2 work. I still
wonder
about compatibility issues. (I am planning to use Tolis Group9s
BRUCLI backup software.)

4 Scratch the backup plan for now and pray there are no problems.
Also, continue discussions with central IT (ITS) to get them to do disaster
recovery backup.

If anyone has any experience or suggestions, I would appreciate the info.!
