more than likely it is a dns problem. Try connecting via the IP address instead of the name may be a bit quicker. if it is, then the problem is most definately dns related.

Make sure you have both forward and reverse dns setup correctly.

Check your DNS.

You might also open a sniffer to look at exactly what is transpiring. That would be standard troubleshooting technique.
