As pointed out you should probably run Apple Sytsem Profiler when
its connected. Also there's the XServe diagnostics and TechTool
(part of AppleCare or the Pro version you can buy).

Seriously you should be running diagnostics before posting possible
hw issues to a list as no one can begin to guess th answers to the
questions you pose w/o knowing more.

Also try "dusting out" the bay, examining for moths, checking to
make sure connectors aren't physically and visibly broken, and that
cables and wiring are intact.

I posted to the list because the disk isn't even recognized in apple system profiler or TechTool, and wanted to know if anyone had come across a similar problem. Already checked the drive bay for damage, dust and didn't see any moths. Thanks, I am familiar with hardware troubleshooting.

Since you are familiar with hardware troubleshooting this is probably silly
to ask so please do not be offended (no, I'm not being sarcastic) but did
you reset the PMU? Did you reset PRAM? Are there any other devices
connected to the server (FW drives, 2nd ATA card, SCSI card)? If you reboot
the server with the drive in the bay does it then appear? Does the drive
spin up with its red light? Does the server recognize the drive module when
booted to a CD?

And further, have you tried the drive module in any other drive space on the server? Have you removed the drive from the module and tried it on it's own to determine if it is the drive itself that is defective or the module that contains it?
