quickest way to gd supported php

I need to have gd support for php web projects. Apple's php does not have support for gd and freetype. My current intesion was to install the packaged fink version of gd2 and freetype2, and then compile the latest version of PHP 4.x in /usr/local and edit the httpd.conf files to point there. Since this will kill the better part of a day I was wondering if there is an easier and quicker way?
