Xserve RAID owners might want to watch out for this issue:
FWIW, I have an Xserve RAID that was reported by RAID Admin to be
fine, but noticed that the performance was quite poor. I soon
discovered that the activity light of the 4th drive of a 7 drive RAID
set would flash in unison with the other drives during READ
operations, but remained steady during WRITE operations. AppleCare
Premium Support suggested that the drive be replaced, but otherwise
seemed unimpressed with the undetected failure. I wasn't impressed by
their lack of concern. There are either conditions beyond detection
or a failure in the detector.
Nevertheless, the drive has been replaced and rebuilt and I am going
to verify the parity tonight...
