Thank you for the feedback. The interface can be customized, so
perhaps a
few tweaks would adapt it to meet your criteria. To facilitate use
for new
users, you could create an HTML "Readme" document with
instructions. Any
other solution will probably require your partners to install a
client side
application or plug-in, which introduces new issues.
As I mentioned I think the technology is great and it would be nice
to have the files uploaded directly to our main server. The standard
interface looks almost like my first homepage in the mid 90'es and
you could do much, much better than that. I did read the manual for
WebShare but part about customizing it was to complex for me at the
time, and I haven't looked at it since because we have never actually
used the product.
I encourage you to test WebShare UB (it is on your HELIOS CD021).
The new
UB version includes support for HTML forms so that customer
interaction is
facilitated (e.g. via e-mail forms, text boxes, pop-up lists, check
boxes,
etc). Otherwise, the interface is unchanged. Also, the new
version of
WebShare does not need the purchase of an Apple WebObjects license,
so it
works right out of the box on all HELIOS platforms. We do have a
wish-list
of enhancements, and HELIOS is continuing development of WebShare
(as we do
with all of our products), so additional features will be
introduced as
either updates, or in the next version.
Our current WebShare is running on an old G4 with a Mac OS X 10.3
Server that we bought for just that. Can we trash that and have
WebShare run on our Sun or do we still need a separate Mac for
WebShare? Doesn't it rely on WebObjects anymore?
It would be fine to use it for the customers that are willing to
learn the
interface and regularly send files to us,
Perhaps you could install it and have a pilot program for these users.
I'm hessitant to force new things onto our customers. WebShare really
wouldn't provide any new features for them, as most of them just drop
some files for us. WebShare is nice when two locations frequently
share documents and images because of the possibillity for previews,
but for simple filesharing it's overkill.
In any case, thank you for the feedback, which I will forward to our
development team.
I don't have much input other than the interface really needs
improvement. It should be based on XHTML and CSS so that it's easy to
customize and look like a companys current website.
