I have a simple but stupid question.  We are trying to figure out a way to have our mail, dns, and web in our dmz zone.  What kind of processing power would we need to be able to do just these 3 functions.  Would a mini be able to handle this? What if we just had a dns and web server, would the mini be able to handle it with server software?

Depends on what kind of traffic you are looking at, if it's only a few connections per second/minute/hour then it should be OK. if your looking at 10+ connections per second (just pulling numbers out of the air here) a single mini most likely won't be fast enough.

As  has been discussed before, mini's were not designed with continuous use in mind. Meaning they were never designed to handle the workload of a server, just the more "simple" day to day work of a home user. But if your not planning on being a high traffic site or mail server then they should be OK. They also have the benefit of being very cheap so creating a farm of mini's to handle your work would be much cheaper then a single XServe, (about 6 mini's to the price of 1 xserve, not including the cost of OSX server). This would give you plenty of hardware redundancy but a lot more technical work (at least getting it up and running would).

I can't remember, are the mini's using 4200, 5400 or 7200 RPM hard drives?
