HFS+ has always supported long filenames, but the Classic Finder
didn't. Other stuff, like the Apple Java Runtime, used long names as
well, you just couldn't see them.

Still, few people took advantage of it!

I am the author of CrushFTP. Just wanted to chime in with my comments. I'll try not to be too much of a marketing drone.

CrushFTP supports long filenames via Java in MacOS 8/9, and in OS X. It also supports extended ASCII characters via UTF8 if the FTP client handles it.

Nearly every feature Rumpus has today, came first from CrushFTP. CrushFTP leads, Rumpus follows. I wrote CrushFTP out of my dislike of Rumpus. :(

CrushFTP also can work through all firewalls since it natively can handle PASV mode and doesn't rely on the firewall/router to do the translations for it. Its also anywhere from over half, to 10 times cheaper than Rumpus depending on your needs.

In addition, the current version of CrushFTP supports FTPS (FTP over SSL) so data is encrypted and secure.

And a big feature if you allow people to download from you is that CrushFTP can do zipping of files/folders on the fly. So say you have a "folder" of 1000 files, you an request "folder.zip" and you will get one single .zip file containing everything in that folder. Very handy.

You can setup email events to notify you of uploads / downloads allowing you to keep your work flow smooth.

You can also integrate it with a SQL server, or other various plugins to make your user management simple. You can setup accounts that only live for a day or so and are auto deleted...again simplifying your work load.

As for developer responsiveness...I'm very responsive. :) Unless you were paying for some expensive support, you won't find better support than what I give for free.

I would also like to mention that CrushFTP 4 has WebDAV support and SFTP support along with its already secure FTPS support. So basically one server to handle all file transfer needs. WebDAV will let PC / Mac users upload natively from their OS with ease. Same thing Apple uses for their iDisk with .Mac. (CrushFTP 4 is in private beta currently.)

You'll have to wait a couple more years before Rumpus catches back up with CrushFTP 4...if they even attempt it.

There is also a plugin architecture for CrushFTP that allows you or me to develop custom plugins to do specific actions for you. This is how the SQL plugin was created, and many others.

To be fair, I have a vested interest in your interest of CrushFTP, or FTP in general. I am not an innocent bystander with no affiliations.
