Minor trivia point...John O'Fallon of Rumpus and I, in the dawn of time before OS X, figured out how to have Rumpus on OS 8 deal with > 31 character file names. It was a total hack, but it worked really well, (up to 200 or so characters IIRC). Anyone could have done it, but John was the only one willing to "Think Different" and actually do it.
HFS+ has always supported long filenames, but the Classic Finder didn't. Other stuff, like the Apple Java Runtime, used long names as well, you just couldn't see them.
Still, few people took advantage of it!
