I have a simple but stupid question. We are trying to figure out a
way to have our mail, dns, and web in our dmz zone. What kind of
processing power would we need to be able to do just these 3
functions.
This would depend on your traffic and CPU intensity of your [web]
applications. While we might sacrifice some goats to try and divine
the right answer for your situation, asking your own people for some
metrics and requirements might be the better option.
Would a mini be able to handle this?
Possibly, but likely not, as they aren't designed for contiunous use,
have slow HDs, and limited RAM expansion with slower busses.
What if we just had a dns and web server, would the mini be able to
handle it with server software?
Ditto.
And finally, I'd strongly recommend you not host your own DNS unless
you have dual homed networks to your site.
