Yes there is, Use the ditto commend.

here is how I do it one one of my servers after we update.

ditto /usr/local/mysql-standard-5.0.17-osx10.3-powerpc/data /usr/local/mysql-standard-5.0.18-osx10.3-powerpc/data

I would like note, You can change the data dir in the my.cnf file so that you don't have to do this every time,
We store all the dbs on a raid on most of my servers, When I update mysql we don't have to move the data dirs.
