Re: Spotlight's impact on network

Rick,

We converted our server farm and clients from 10.3.x to 10.4.x last summer and had the same symptom set reported to us by users, with an additional symptom of client computers hanging on logout and occasionally at login.

We opened a case in the Fall with Apple server support and luckily caught a tech we had previous experience with and found highly effective. Working with the tech we identified 3 leading possibilities; problematic image builds (based on early 10.4.x imaging tools), Spotlight indexing, and Norton's live update scan. Working with the tech we developed several test image loads we deployed to different labs in order to test possible solutions.

In the end it appears all 3 causes played a role. The final image build we used to re-image the campus during the December holiday break was made with the Netrestore 3.1 tools, 10.4.3, and Spotlight indexing turned off and Symantec anti-viral tools removed. This seems to have resolved the majority of issues, however we still see an occasional hung logout if clients either use a set of photos as their desktop picture set change on a fixed schedule or they attempt to logout w/o quitting open apps.

Hope This Helps,

Mark

Any opinions or experiences with Spotlight on OS X clients with network home directories? Is there an impact on network performance?

I just replaced a high school lab of eMacs running Panther with G5 iMacs running Tiger. Yesterday was the first "load" day and the lab teacher called stating that they were experiencing major lags in logins and applications opening. When testing one machine in an empty lab I saw no problems. But thirty simultaneous logins seem to bring things to a standstill. So I am looking for culprits. Spotlight? Dashboard and widgets? Tiger client to Panther server incompatibilities? Other suggestions.

The current G5 server is running 10.3.9 and scheduled to be replaced or paired with a Tiger XServe as soon as we get a break. Still researching the best procedure for the migration. Preliminary plan is to upgrade the G5 tower to Tiger and load balance with the Xserve as a replica. Or would it be best to start fresh with the Xserve as OD Master, move/split home directories and reconfigure the tower as the replica.

Any and all suggestions greatly appreciated.

Rick Davis
