In the end it appears all 3 causes played a role. The final image
build we used to re-image the campus during the December holiday
break was made with the Netrestore 3.1 tools, 10.4.3, and
Spotlight indexing turned off and Symantec anti-viral tools
removed. This seems to have resolved the majority of issues,
however we still see an occasional hung logout if clients either
use a set of photos as their desktop picture set change on a fixed
schedule or they attempt to logout w/o quitting open apps.
Thanks Mark. How did you turn off Spotlight Indexing? Did this
have any adverse effects on searches through finder or any other apps?
On our client master image source we edited the hostconfig file found
in the /etc directory from:
SPOTLIGHT=-YES-
to:
SPOTLIGHT=-NO-
The Find.. command in the Finder's File menu continues to work
normally; we've had no reports of searches through other apps being
affected. Several users noticed the lack of Spotlight, but not as
many as expected.

Mark
