Re: Counting traffic

Hi.
Has anyone figured the best way to count traffic on a firewall? I thought I'd ask before writing a script that checks ipfw data. Bascially the need is to count all packets diverted by natd, originating from the internal net destined to the outside and vice versa. Maybe there's some commercial solution available for headless configs, or maybe someone has a working script already and can share it with me.
Thanks in advance!

We have this for our residence. It tracks individual usage (based on MAC) for each user as well as tracking what each person is doing. The whole system also generates some web pages so individual users can view there own usage (and charges) as well as allowing me to view a list of user usage.

We could not get this to work with ipfw rules because of some missing staff in the kernel so we used tcpdump and a slightly modified NATd. We do not use an Xserve for this but an old 933Mhz G4 which is our Gateway machine. It keeps up with our wireless network (half g/b and half b) of 300 users. It only tacks users traffic to the outside world not internal traffic. It also tracks the traffic that is routed to the main university network.

The system was put together mostly by a couple of very bright students from the residence. We have presented this at a local IT conference and I will gladly share the ppt presentation if anyone is interested.

I am away from the office this week and although I have e-mail I do not have access to the gateway machine. I do have the presentation on my laptop and can send that out. I can help more once I am back on Feb. 6.
