I have just upgraded two servers from 10.3.8 thru 10.3.9 then onto 10.4.3
everything seems to have gone fine.
However when launching "server admin" there are no entries of any
kind in the GUI for DNS??
DNS is working correctly and all the relevant entries are in /var/named
So why has the GUI been blitzed??
DNS GUI on Tiger is only for very simple DNS setups. It's an obvious
regression in functionality from Panther and Apple did it on
purpose. It is literally impossible to create the necessary DNS
config through the GUI. It's absolutely user hostile! I'd rather see
Panther's DNS GUI reinstated rather than deal with Tiger's DNS GUI.
I'd rather Apple rip out the GUI for DNS entirely. It gives people
the false impression this is a service they should be running.
DNS zone files are far better crafted using the favored editor
according to you personal religious convictions. You'll end up with a
far better system for DNS management, and one you should have and
probably needed to use as a workflow in the first place.
But to answer the poster's question, forget the GUI, just edit the
files appropriately. While you're at it, add nice comments to them
too, you really want to.
