Re: Remote Printing with IPP

Dear Geoff

Yes my client and server are on a different subnet (home/office). I have seen other people with the problem of the cupsd.conf being overwritten, what a pain! After some trawling on the web I came across this hint:

Use the advanced printer protocols menu. After clicking ADD, hold the option key while clicking More Printers. Select Advanced from the bottom of the first new menu. Now select IPP using http.
Enter the URI like this:
http://{user}:{passwd}@{IP_of_printer}:631/printers/{queue name}

this fails!, now I get the message "Unable to look up host" even though it doesn't really have to "look up" and IP address?, from the printer utility, even though the laptop I am testing on is connected to the web etc …, any thoughts

Are your clients and servers on a different subnet? I'm not positive, but it
seems like (in our case) the default apple setup only allows cups from the
local subnet, and you'll have to specifically permit it in the cupsd.conf
file. Additionally, ServerAdmin tends to overwrite this file whenever you
modify print services through it, resulting in an inability to print, so
make sure you keep a backup handy to copy back over and restart cupsd when
necessary. We've also run into problems on a fresh boot, where cupsd needs
to be restarted to pick up the actual cupsd.conf file that's been sitting
there all along.
