Hey Doug!
I'm not sure this is Panther/Tiger specific, but it has to do with your hostname during the creation of the automount share points in WM. It currently must be the FQDN (you can verify in /etc/hostconfig) and therefore when you created the share, it used that to store the mount information.
Two things you can do:
1) Manually edit the mount point in Workgroup Manager in the Inspector to just have ohs-students instead of the FQDN. This is in the Mounts Container.
I would fix the user accounts rather than "break" the mount record. To avoid this in the future make sure you login to WGM using the FQDN. Depending on how many users you have, WGM is a easy way to batch edit them to the correct setting too.
or
1) Get rid of your automount in WM 2) Rename your host from the FQDN to the regular hostname in /etc/ hostconfig 3) restart 4) recreate your automount in WM, it should now just use the hostname instead of the FQDN
I would really avoid this as it has the potential to mess up your server's sense of self and without that all sorts of other stuff like OD, KDC, mail, etc... may start to explode in rather impressive ways.

Good luck!

I finally got past my problems with syncing up my users and their passwords (I think). Now I've got a new one:
Users cannot find their home directories.
I brought over the users (an ldif file), passwords (via mkpassdb) and directory structures (via rsync) from our old Panther Server to a new Tiger Server (10.4.3). After much sturm-und-drang, this seems to have gone OK, except...
When I attempt to "su - username", I'm told "su: no directory". So I went exploring. In the ldap record, the NFSHomeDirectory value for the user is "/Network/Servers/ohs-students/Volumes/OHS-Users/ home/username". However, if I "ls /Network/Servers" on the new server, what I see is "ohs-students.osd.wednet.edu", the FQDN. On the old Panther server, I just see "ohs-students".
Changing the ldap record fixes the problem. However, I don't know which I should focus on: changing all the user records, or changing the way the volume is listed in /Network/Servers. Which way is correct? Or is it something that changed between 10.3 and 10.4?
