ACL's set for teacher to read/write, but they can't

Here's our setup:

1 XServe
2 HD - 80 GB with OS on it only. 400 GB for data.
Two sharing points on 400 GB data drive: One folder for Students. One folder for Teachers.
AFP running and Open Directory Master

I create a Group called Teachers and a Group called Students in WGM. To test I add a couple of student names to the Accounts, add them to the Students group, and create their home directory in the Students sharing folder. All is well, their home directories show up in the Students sharing folder.

I go back to Sharing in WGM. I highlight the Students shared folder, have the User groups come out, drag the Group Teachers to the ACL list, set it to Read and Write, go down to the little gray wheelie at the bottom, pull down the menu and select Propagate permissions (or whatever the 3rd one down is). I don't have a server right in front of me at the moment. I leave the window that pops up to the default and save.

I go back to accounts, create a teacher, add them to the teacher group and save. I then log in as the teacher and I select the Students share point. Inside I see the students I added. When I click on their home directories, whatever is inside has the red dash through it. (Except for Public and sites).

Yet, for practice the other night I threw the server software on a G5 iMac, had it configured and updated within an hour, did the exact same thing I did above and the teacher could read the student's folder. I thought great, it's finally working. The only difference between the iMac and XServe configuration is that the iMac only has one drive.

What am I doing wrong where the Teacher cannot see what's inside the students home directories????? This is so frustrating when it works one day on one computer and doesn't the next time I configure a server. I am not changing any permissions, nothing! Everything is default until I set the ACL.

I am hoping for a simple explanation. I have four more servers to set up! If anyone has any ti[, I would be so very grateful!

Nanc
