Re: Moving to OSX Server 10.4.8 universal binary

Hi

We have are currently using the power pc?? version of OSX server and have been recommended to install the universal binary to hopefully resolve some issues we are having with the server currently.

I understand it requires a new install rather than upgrade. Could someone confirm please.

#1, Does this mean that the drive will need to be formatted or will it just reinstall over the existing version. If it just installs over the existing version does it leave all config files in place or does it need to be completely reinstalled?

#2, If it does require a full rebuild does anyone know if there is a concise list being created of all the files or folder that should be backed up and restored after then install? eg /etc and /var /named etc files. This would help to ensure that our list is complete and nothing is missed.

We have 5 servers effected that are a mix of open directory master and replicas. running virtually all services over they various machines and locations.

I have looked for this info, but as yet have not been able to find anything reliable that answers these questions.

You would do best to backup your data and do a full install, if nothing else to ensure that you have a known-good install of the OS rather than anything as "frankenstein-ian" as you suggest.

For some of the settings in Server Admin, you'll find a pulloff icon in the lower right which you can drag & drop into the same window on your newly setup server.
However, it's hard to answer your question without knowing what/all services you're running and how much you've customized things.
/private/var and /private/etc yes, but know what you're migrating and why. You may also wish to preserve some things in the main /Library folder.

But, I'd suggest against a simply copy-over of  (/private)/var/db without understanding that you're migrating the NetInfo db and some extra steps might be advisable:

As well, if you export your OD config on the master, you can import that on your newly installed server and it will include the NetInfo settings.
The LDAP db, password server db, kerberos config and NetInfo db are included in the export/import process.

The following should be of interest and help:

Please do note, that a search of the archives of this list will have shown you (some of) your questions have been discussed fairly recently:

PS: It's helpful for some (like me) that you start a new thread rather than reply to an existing one, as doing so throws off threaded topics.
(For Mail.app it certainly does.) - thanks.
