With our NAS, there isn't really another decent way to go. I'm not really sure why automount is caring about it anyways. It's mounted manually via the command line with mount_nfs. What's the best place to look for mounts?

/etc/fstab is nonexistant
I don't see anything related to nfs in WM

The mounts are all define in NetInfo. Apple still uses NetInfo for all local stuff - including mounts. You CAN use /etc/fstab, but this is for the boot process and not for normal mounts.

Am I unreasonable to assume that osx is able to hang onto a mount?
Should I be mounting it with automount instead of mount_nfs?

What options are you using? If you can, background the mount and mount interruptably so you can control-C processes on a non- functioning mount. Of course, this is not very good for home dirs, but sometimes it just helps.

If properly entered, nfs shares are automatically mounted when defined in NetInfo. It's been a long time since I last did that, though, and in the meantime I use a simple script which is placed in the StartupItems (I know, I know, should move to launchd ...).
