I have seen similar behavior with clients connecting to SMB (Samba) and/or AFP (Netatalk 1.64) shares on FreeBSD and Linux servers.

If I remember right, it was the combination of folder name with spaces and/or umlauts (or any other special character) and also files in it with spaces and/or umlauts. Also folder/file names starting/ending with a space could be a problem. Also files ending in a dot are not a good idea on a SMB share.

Are there also Windows clients which connect through SMB to the same (group?) share?

It helped solve this kind of problems to educate the users in using a shared server infrastructure for Mac, Linux/Unix and Windows clients with avoiding special characters in folder/file names and eg. only use a-z, A-Z, 0-9, ".", "-", "_" and maybe some others like "+" or space. Also avoid ":", "/" and "\" as they can make trouble on some of the other operating systems.
