To my knowledge, the core technology behind windows terminal
services developed by Citrix is unrivaled in terms of the bandwidth
efficiency / quality ratio. GUI remote access alternatives such as
VNC and X11 are generally too slow for regular use over many WAN (or
consumer internet) connections, when terminal services often works
well enough under the same conditions.
VNC works nicely on my Palm Treo for controlling remote systems. So
I'd say it's neither a bandwidth or client issue. I'd hate to use it
every day, but for the cases where I'm out in the field it's a
trooper.
I know of no generic VNC viewers available through a web browser interface,
Like one of the Java based ones?
but it looks like the RealVNC server sports a java viewer that can
be run through a browser: http://www.realvnc.com/javavncviewer.html
RealVNC would need to be installed on the computers you wish to
control.
