Thanks. I added the -E option and changed rsync versions and this
solved the FCP file problem.
rsync from Tiger does support the -E option when writing directly to
HFS+ or any other "local" filesystem, even when mounted with nfs or
smb.
It also works(*) for remote filesystems and ssh rsyncs as well.
(*) if you think rsync "works" properly at all with it's metadata loss
