I implemented Avelsieve a few days ago at a customer's, seems to work
like a charm. Not really straightforward (it does much more than just
"vacation reply", but seems efficient to me. Not too hard to install
too.

We have Avelsieve in a few locations and it works well. Just make sure that anyone who will be using it explicitly fills out the name and email address in the Options in SquirrelMail so that the messages go out with an actual email address.
