Remove all the font caches.
Consider using a Font Manager ( you may already be using one )
This seems to be a general font cache issue with 10.4.

Or just do a "shift-startup" as you would for Windows. This will clear
those caches along with some other things that Apple had detailed on
their site, but I can't find at the moment.
Log in to the normal user and then reboot. Problem gone. (until the
next time it happens)
