RAID mirror repair results in 'phantom' extra slice that cannot be removed

In the process of rebuilding a degraded two-disk software RAID (mirror) on a G4 xserve per the instructions at <http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106987>, I now have a two-disk RAID with both drives back as 'Online' but also an additional third 'phantom' slice with the same device node as one of the others, yet no UUID and a 'Missing/Damaged' status:

Name: RAID1
Unique ID: 6F67C317-CC1E-45C6-9658-813B5A5467E4
Type: Mirror
Status: Degraded
Device Node: disk2
Apple RAID Version: 2
----------------------------------------------------------------------
# Device Node UUID Status
----------------------------------------------------------------------
2 disk0s3 12C586FE-66E7-4B72-9FAD-9290A118284D Online
1 disk1s4 B1C284BC-3092-4E84-9764-933D8A43F5BD Online
2 Unknown Missing/Damaged
----------------------------------------------------------------------

The man page for diskutil says that the slices to be removed can be specified as oldDisk or oldUUID, where oldDisk can be a Device Node or Disk Identifier (of which Device Node is the only option here since this slice has no UUID). I've tried running 'diskutil removeFromRAID' to remove this phantom slice, but the command

    diskutil removeFromRAID Unknown disk2

yields the error "Could not find the disk to remove from the RAID" and the Device Node of "Unknown" is all I have to use here. Is there anything that can be done to remove this extra phantom slice, aside from removing one of the (online) drives and rebuilding the RAID again? Thanks for any suggestions.
