Re: Is port 22 safe for SSH through firewall?

Good afternoon,

However this doesn't eliminate potential DoS attacks you may receive from having the doorbell rung. These can have a negative impact if you use passwords and not keys. (Keys also give you the advantage of being able to log in when passwords won't work.)

Could you please expand on that. I've got one server where PasswordService dies every couple of months. And my key-based SSH login doesn't work.

How can I setup SSH so that key-based connections will still work if PasswordService has died? And no, I don't have better definition of 'PasswordService has died' since the only way I have found to recover is power cycle the machine. And the log files have not shed any light on the issue.

The only reason I know it's PasswordService is that I happened to have a shell open one time and was able to do some investigation. But I had to quickly power cycle (sudo wasn't working obviously) since customer was screaming for machine to come back.
