Mac OS 9 clients are disconnected when they try to transfer files to the server. Usually happens after the second copy.

Be very cautious - there is no easy way to go back to 10.4.8 once you update to 10.4.9.

Sure there is. You restore from the full backup you took before you installed the update. You did perform this backup, right? If you didn't, well then that's your foot you shot, learn to limp.
