So here's my real question, which is the better driver to use, Apple's WWAN driver, or the Novatel EvDO driver downloaded from Sprint?

Apple's WWAN update, sadly, is only compatible with Intel-based portable systems (in other words, only the MacBook and MacBook Pro). I don't know if this has changed with 10.4.9. But, I believe you will need to use Novatel's driver for your iBook. I've found the WWAN driver to work well on my MBP with the Sprint U720.

Verizon's VZAccess software (a rebranded Smith Micro product) should be compatible with Verizon's version of the U720 and all Macs.

I have used a U720 on an iBook, i.e. a PPC. It worked great...
