Re: rsync [was Re: 10.4.9 just hit the streets]

someone mailed me privately (I am not mentioning the name as I do not know if I may) with his results to the tests I suggested.
The results were somehow puzzling:

1) scp and rsync (both with the -E flag) did transfer the ACE/ACLs correctly

2) tar did not seem to transfer them at all

(1) is in line with what Apple seems to say, (2) is not.
On the other hand I get them all transferring, or attempting to, ACLs, but for scp and rsync I get the unresolved user name (as I wrote previously), while for tar I get a split file with the data part (say foo) normal (but without the ACL) and an extra file foo.<three chars> that carries the same unresolved ACL.

So, as I did update the two system differently, I suspect there is some issue there. Another issue might be the case sensitiveness of my filesystems.

Can I then ask that some more tests are done? Please say how you updated your systems, how users are stored and:

md5 /usr/bin/tar
MD5 (/usr/bin/tar) = 923660376788f856988c45f58b392a8a

md5 /usr/bin/rsync
MD5 (/usr/bin/rsync) = b8c9bbff40b1620d7c81adeb13818b75

md5 /usr/bin/scp
MD5 (/usr/bin/scp) = 669e2e5608aa68af89b89d0ba78b7fb0

although the problem might lie in /usr/lib/libSystem.B.dylib and indeed I have a difference between the two different updated systems:

the perhaps one badly updated:
md5 /usr/lib/libSystem.B.dylib
MD5 (/usr/lib/libSystem.B.dylib) = 71b51ec31ba9f0870b654acfdfaedc0b

and the one update via the updater downloaded with System Update:

md5 /usr/lib/libSystem.B.dylib
MD5 (/usr/lib/libSystem.B.dylib) = 76b66368531bf1cd6cbe13d0b723bd60
