You mentioned using LDapper, what did that tell you? In al honesty, I like ldapbrowser (http://www-unix.mcs.anl.gov/~gawor/ldap/) even better, despite its age. Try firing that up and see if it sheds any light.



Is there something that I need to enable on the server to allow ldap authentication?

By default, OS X allows anonymous binds, so, unless you've prevented that, you should be fine. You may also want to check logs on the server side.
