We have a problem with Samba locking up our OS X server sometimes and it sounds like we're not the only ones.
We are using OS 10.4.9 and Samba as our primary domain controller and have 3 OS X servers set up as BDCs in different subnets. We've been migrating our Windows 98, 2000 and XP clients to this Samba domain for a while and have worked out the kinks up till now.
The BDC that servers the greatest number of client home shares has been locking up recently. Sometimes an smbd process will appear to get stuck in a loop and use 50+% CPU constantly, sometimes we'll have many smbd processes spawning and taking up to 100% process time between them. When this happens the server is VERY slow to respond and will lock out ssh sometimes, not shut down properly, etc.
Yesterday we had only a handful of windows computers logged on and the server only showed 3 connections, but smbd was consistently taking above 90% processor time. Restarting smb fixed it, but the problem comes back at least once a week.
This didn't seem to be an issue before 10.4.9. Does anyone know of how to fix this? We wondered about setting the nice level for the smbd process so it couldn't lock up the rest of the server. Has anyone tried this and found whether it stops smbd from getting stuck in it's loop?
Thanks
