We use a lot of virtualization for our windows and linux servers. We
have been purchasing very large quad quad-core processors with 16GB of
ram for our ESX servers to hold the virtual machines. We run around 15
virtual machines per box (6 boxes total). To purchase an individual
server for each individual server would cost a great deal of money and
use up a lot more power. For a short answer, we save a lot of power, Use
our infrastructure to the max and also have an extra benefit of disaster
recovery. We backup snapshot of our virtual machines. If our datacenter
would happen to be destroyed, we can easily and quickly bring all the
servers backup at another remote site.
